Smith was born 1821 Sept. 5 near Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., to Thomas and Mary (Scott) Smith, taught school for several years, and in 1845 was licensed as a Methodist Episcopal minister. He was ordained the next year. He married Martha L. Hightower in 1847, and they had several children.
